We had a mind-opening interview with Designer & Artist Jamie Hayon, who broke the rules and re-established the game by accomplishing creative works in different fields. Jaime Hayon established his own studio in 2000 and has accomplished countless works ranging from furniture, accessories, lighting to interior design. Hayon is at the forefront of a new wave of talent that is further blurring the boundaries between art, decoration and design.
Sharon Doncourt: We have been through this rough 1.5 year and this made us reflect about everything in a wider perspective. Did your design approach change or do you feel closer to a holistic approach than before?
Jamie Hayon: The last period has been one full of challenges and this is always an opportunity to reflect and explore. Personally, ı have thought a lot about the work space at home and the flexibility of home furniture. My design perspective has always been towards meaning and the importance of the emotional connection and that’s where I try to dive deeper each time.
You are multidisciplinary from the start; joggling from fine art to furniture design and even branding. What do you think about the current hype on this approach?
Jamie Hayon: Honestly I don’t think about it. For me it is one discipline and that is to explore creativity. I am not able to dissect or categorize creativity which for me can become anything and that is the magic of it.
What do you think about the integration of technology into the design aspect?
Jamie Hayon: The spirit of design is creativity, innovation and imagination. Art is life for me and it is a natural and organic aspect of my work and it is always present in whatever I do. In my opinion, technology is the means to an end and not the other way around. It is a set of tools that assist in achieving better qualities, faster processes and more reasonable costs.
